12 General Information About the Islands
It was named 12 Adalar because of the way non-Muslims were governed during the Ottoman period. When it is called Twelve Islands, many people think that there are 12 islands in the vicinity. But this is completely wrong. When examined carefully on the map, there are 14 large islands and more than 20 islands in total with small islands. Other islands are called “Southern Sporats”. 12 Islands were an important part of Greece during the Ancient Age. 12 Islands, Rhodes and Kos stand out with their historical findings and artifacts. After the Greeks, Byzantines, Romans and people living in the Hellenistic period also left their mark on the 12 Islands.
According to the Treaty of Ushi signed in 1912, 12 Islands were to be given to the Ottoman Government by Italy. The Ottoman Government thought that the Greeks might occupy these islands and decided to keep them in Italy until the end of the Balkan War. Later on, serious differences of opinion began to arise between Italy and the Ottomans. Although they wanted to be taken back later, Italy did not accept this. 12 Italy became the country that wrote the islands into its territory. During World War 2, the wars ended here with Italy’s defeat, Britain’s efforts to seize the 12 Islands and Germany’s stay in Germany. Then, as a result of the Treaty of Paris, Greece officially owned the 12 Islands.
