Ottoman Navy
Sultan Abdülmecit’s visit to the navy The painting was painted by navy painter Hüsnü Tengüz The sultan is on the boat in front and the sultan is seen on the left side .an Ottoman galleon is seen in the back .this galleon is the famous Mahmudiye galleon
Mahmudiye was a galleon-type warship of the Ottoman Navy.
She was built in 1829 by engineer Mehmet Efendi and architect Mehmet Kalfa at the Istanbul shipyard during the reign of Mahmud II. She was dismantled during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II. The Mahmudiye Galleon, which was the largest warship in the world when it was built as a 128-gun galleon with three holds, is a very large warship. The total number of crew consists of 1280 people. This ship, which is even larger than the British and French ships that dominate the oceans, participated in the Crimean War and showed great usefulness.
A 1:33 scale model of the Mahmudiye Galleon is on display at the Istanbul Naval Museum.
While there are about 50 cannons on the right and left sides of the galleons, there are 1 or 2 cannons in the bow and stern areas, so the ship needs to stand on its side to attack, if 3 people look at each cannon, only 300 crew members are needed for 100 cannons. If 100 or 200 people look at other jobs, here is 500 crew members. A land or ship bombarded by 50 cannons at the same time is lethal if the hits are accurate.Hüsni Tengüz is one of the best military painters of all time. While his star shone in the 2nd Abdulhamid period, this important person was not appreciated in the Republican period. The great artist was born in Istanbul in 1876 and died in 1950, also in Istanbul.
